2019 FREE COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

Everyone benefits from a health community and a healthy workforce. By so many measures, Alexandria is a healthy community, but there remains a small but exceedingly vulnerable segment within our midst for which good health and well-being are increasingly beyond their reach.  Even with the advent of Medicaid expansion, it is estimated that at least 3,500 low-income residents will not qualify for Medicaid and will therefore continue to struggle to obtain timely and affordable health care when they need it. The Fifth Free Health Fair, tentatively scheduled for the last Saturday in October of this year, will be designed and implemented with just those individuals in mind.

Like the four health fairs before it, the 2019 Free Health Fair will (1) provide all attendees with access to a broad range of important diagnostic and preventive health services (e.g. glucose and cholesterol tests, vision and hearing screens, dental exams, mental health screens, blood pressure monitoring, HIV testing and counseling, and many more) to allow them to better understand their own health status, and (2) assist those with more serious symptoms or conditions to receive critical follow up care and treatment at a cost that will not be burdensome to them.

Moreover, enrollment specialists will be on hand to assist those who may qualify for eligibility under Medicaid or for subsidies to purchase health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).  Finally, many community support organizations will be present to inform attendees about other health and social services in the community for which they might be eligible.
